Genesis 2:7(KJV)
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
It is important to emphasize that Adam did not lose his salvation as a result of his disobedience; he was never saved in the first place. He is not the perfect definition for the man God wanted.
God wanted Adam to be in his image.
Genesis 1:26(KJV)
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
By paying attention to the New Testament writings, we find out that there is more to this vision God had for man, beyond the physical implication.
If the image of God really was about our physical looks, then God might as well be suffering from a multiple appearance disorder cuz we are all different persons with different looks.
The image of God is Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4(KJV)
3. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4. In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of CHRIST, WHO IS THE IMAGE OF GOD, should shine unto them.
Colossians 1:12-15(KJV)
12. Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
13. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his DEAR SON:
14. In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15. WHO IS THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD, the firstborn of every creature.
Christ is the image of God.
So, God's actual plan was to create man in the order of His Son. His intention was to make man IN CHRIST.
Romans 8:29(KJV)
For whom he did foreknow, HE ALSO DID PREDESTINATE TO BE CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE OF HIS SON, that he might be the firstborn (prototype) among many brethren.
Adam was never that person. This process would have been complete if he had partaken of the tree of life.
But he never did.
He did otherwise.
This whole illustration is to make us understand that Adam was never saved.
Back to our theme verse, it should be quite clear now that the breath of life is NOT the Holy Spirit.
It was never something peculiar to man.
See
Genesis 6:17(KJV)
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy ALL FLESH, wherein is THE BREATH OF LIFE, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
So, "all flesh"—i.e., every creature that was flesh and blood (e.g., cattle, sheep, birds, etc.)—had the breath of life.
Genesis 7:15,21-22(KJV)
15. And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of ALL FLESH, wherein is the BREATH OF LIFE.
21. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22. All in whose nostrils was the BREATH OF LIFE, of all that was in the dry land, died.
The breath of life is natural life.
Cessation of life is the inability to breath anymore.
So it is not something peculiar to man, not even to the man in Christ. Every living creature has the breath of life in them.
