There are a number of teachings that emphasize the need for believers to give themselves to the study of God's word in order to grow spiritually. This is very good.
However, using the verse above for such an admonition is not accurate at all.

First off, the books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are referred to as the synoptic Gospels (excluding the book of John) because they have similar content, fashion, and specific language.
